The Polarsteps team lives and breathes adventurous travel, whether exploring the globe ourselves, following the paths of our community of 10+ million explorers, or researching up-and-coming destinations. Our in-house travel experts put this collective knowledge together to inspire you with a list of the best countries to visit for unforgettable adventures in 2025. So without further ado, here is the first edition of our annual Polarsteps Picks.

Angola

Angola has been called one of Africa's last great travel mysteries for good reason – its untold natural and cultural riches have been off-limits due to one of the world’s most restrictive visa regimes. However, the country’s doors have recently swung fully open, with visa-free access for almost 100 nationalities – just in time for you to join Angolans celebrating their 50th year of independence in 2025!

The year will be full of nationwide events, cultural showcases, and exciting new attractions opening to honor this special anniversary. And with government resources being pumped into conservation and eco-tourism (as a way of evolving its economy away from its dependence on oil), Angola’s dramatic landscapes, beach-lined coast, and wildlife-filled national parks are now within your reach, too. Brazil

From samba beats to sandy shores, Brazil instantly conjures images of colorful, music-filled cities, iconic beaches, and the dense rainforest of the Amazon.

In 2025, Brazil takes center stage in global environmental conversations as it hosts COP 30. This pivotal event illustrates the country’s growing commitment to protecting its unique ecosystems, making it an ideal time for you to explore the Amazon. New transformative experiences — part of the government’s new plan for sustainable and regenerative tourism — have also been launched to highlight the role everyone can play in supporting the forest and its indigenous communities.

Finland

Finland has long been a haven for nature lovers and adventurers, and in 2025 it’s set to shine brighter than ever. Thanks to a solar activity peak, the northern lights will be at their most dazzling in over a decade. Imagine hiking snowy forests, dog-sledding across frozen lakes, or relaxing in a glass igloo as vivid greens and purples dance across the Arctic sky.

To encourage exploration of its most beautiful, remote areas, Finland is welcoming new flights from airlines like British Airways and TUI to destinations such as Ivalo and Kajaani, making Lapland more accessible than ever. While Santa’s village in Rovaniemi is a festive favorite, there’s much more to discover — Sámi culture, peaceful villages, and quiet trails away from the crowds.

And Finland’s appeal isn’t limited to winter. Expanded year-round flights make it easy for you to explore in every season, from spring’s blooming landscapes and summer’s midnight sun to autumn’s vibrant “ruska” colors. — by Brin Andrews

Japan

Blending ancient traditions with cutting-edge modernity, Japan offers an experience that transcends time, with stunning natural landscapes and world-renowned cuisine adding to its appeal.

While the crowds will be focused on Osaka, with the World Expo 2025 and the accompanying Osaka Kansai International Art Festival, you’ll be free to explore a little-visited region of Japan like never before. Hop aboard the recently completed expansion of the Hokuriku Shinkansen (bullet train) to experience the once-remote rewards of Fukui prefecture before the word gets out.

Venture along Fukui’s rugged Echizen Coast, skirt along its volcanic cliffs, and dine on some of the nation’s best seafood. Then move inland to hike in the remote wilds of Hakusan National Park, or look for fossils in what’s known as Japan’s ‘Dinosaur Capital’. — by Matt Bainbridge

New Zealand

New Zealand’s enthralling landscapes, treasured Māori culture, and thrilling outdoor activities have long lured adventure seekers. Yet, the country has recently reshaped its offering to visitors, including a multi-year plan for a more inclusive, community-based approach to travel that encourages year-round visitors. The country is also steadily upgrading its infrastructure, from roads and railways to cycling paths and hiking trails.

For the 2025 winter season (Jun–Sep), you can ski and snowboard on the slopes of the expanded Cardrona ski area — now New Zealand’s largest — with 150 hectares, including the Soho Basin, added to the mountains’ skiable terrain.

New Zealand has also opened another of its flagship tramping routes in time for 2025. Following years of upgrade work, the Hump Ridge Track — a three-day, 60km loop in southern Fiordland — has achieved Great Walk status, bringing the nation’s total to 11. — by Nicky Evans
